Du Bois Orchestra Youth Arts Leadership Program
The Youth Arts Leadership Program is designed for students ages 12-16, who believe in serving their communities through the power of classical music. The Du Bois Orchestra at Harvard will host a small group of young orchestral musicians to engage in two separate day-long arts leadership intensives (to be held in Spring and Fall of 2017), as well as receive complimentary tickets to Du Bois Orchestra performances. By equipping youth with leadership tools to spark social impact, the Educational Outreach department will partner with each student to help craft and execute a summer service project in their local communities, with the opportunity to share a presentation on their project at Harvard in Fall 2017.
This program is not intended to be a performance-based program, rather the Du Bois Orchestra strives to create a space for youth who love playing orchestral instruments to come together and gain a greater understanding of the building blocks of leadership through the arts. In keeping with the Du Bois Orchestra’s mission of inclusion, we strongly invite students from traditionally underrepresented groups to apply. Due to the age of the students invited, we also require that one parent/guardian join in the spring and fall visits to Harvard’s campus. All same-day travel costs and on-campus meals for both student and one parent/guardian for the Youth Arts Leadership Program will be covered by the Du Bois Orchestra at Harvard.
To apply, please send the following materials via e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org with the words “Youth Arts Leadership Program Application Materials” in the subject line. Please include in your application:
- A one-page statement introducing yourself, explaining why classical music and serving your community matters to you, and what you hope to gain through the Du Bois Orchestra’s Youth Arts Leadership Program.
- A recent recording of one piece on your major instrument (iPhone or Zoom recording is acceptable).
Please e-mail email@example.com with any questions you may have regarding the application.
We look forward to hearing from you!
Community Impact Project, 2015-2016
In the spirit of social inclusion and outreach, on April 30, 2016, the Du Bois Orchestra is hosting 40 students and their parents from New York City from the Sistema-based music education programs, Opportunity Music Project (OMP), Washington Heights and Inwood Music Project (WHIN). Our orchestra is creating a memorable and exciting day long Harvard experience for the OMP and WHIN families, including a campus tour, arts engagement activities, community meals with the orchestra, and an opportunity to perform side-by-side with the Du Bois Orchestra!
Our goal is to show that Harvard, with its immense historical privilege, is a place for everyone to flourish personally and artistically.
